The Ecosystems of
Wolf Road Prairie
What is a prairie?
A prairie is an ecosystem in which grasses are the dominant species. The
diversity of plants include sedges and wildflowers or forbs. Wolf Road Prairie has
over 320 native species of grasses and forbs. The organic topsoil makes it the most
fertile soil in the world. Growth cells of most prairie plants are underground,
enabling them to withstand periodic fires, drought and high evaporation rates.
