Seasons of the Prairie
Autumn
The plants of the prairie are tall in autumn. Turkey foot or big bluestem, the state
grass of Illinois, can reach six feet in height. Indian grass, cord grass (also called rip gut),
switch grass, little bluestem and northern dropseed range in height from 3 to 5 feet. Saw-toothed
sunflowers reach 10 feet high and color the prairie gold. Prairie seeds ripen.
Look for monarch butterflies migrating south through the prairie to their wintering
grounds in Mexico.
