Seasons of the Prairie
Winter
The hard frost turns the prairie drab. Spent blooms of goldenrods appear
cottony and gray on browned stalks. After the first snowfall, shrew, rabbit squirrel,
coyote and deer tracks crisscross the land. Sometimes, red-tailed hawks circle
above in search of food. Dried leaves of prairie plants stick out from drifts of snow.
Above ground, the prairie is dormant. But deep below, prairie roots have stored
energy . . for the coming spring.
