People on the Prairie
How much prairie is left today?
Illinois--known as "The Prairie State"--has less than 1/100th of 1% of its original
tallgrass prairie remaining. Before settlement, prairie covered over 70% of the land
and amazed 17th Century explorers of the region with its beauty. Wolf Road Prairie is
the biggest and best quality black soil prairie left east of the Mississippi River.
Historic farms like the one pictured here began the conversion of land from prairie to agriculture. In modern times, homes, office buildings and shopping centers converted prairie land to development.
