People on the Prairie

How did they live on the prairie?
The first humans in Illinois adapted to their environment. There were many big game animals such as bison, elk, deer and lots of small critters like squirrel and rabbit for hunting. Streams and lakes assured abundant fish and waterfowl. Easily gathered nuts, berries, grains, roots and prairie plants provided food and medicines.
