What happened when settlers arrived?
The arrival of European settlers signaled the end of wilderness in Illinois. Prairie soil--the most productive in the world-proved ideal for farming. Squabbling and fighting for land favored the settlers and soon drove the Native Americans west of the Mississippi River. There are no Indian reservations in Illinois today. Now farms, cities and shopping centers have replaced our prairies.
