Project Goals and Purpose -- Prairie Garden

map by John O'Lear, Forest Preserve Dist. of Cook Co.

The prairie garden demonstrates ways of preserving native gene pools. Each natural area has a unique genetic thumbprint which evolved over millennia.

Only the seeds harvested at Wolf Road Prairie carry the genetic codes of this Eco-Region. The goal of the garden beds is to maximize seed production from these rare seed sources.

In addition to seed production, the gardens are adjunct seed banks for Wolf Road Prairie species. By developing this back up resource, the chances for preserving the genetic material of Wolf Road Prairie are increased.
