Project Goals and Purpose -- Savanna

map by John O'Lear, Forest Preserve Dist. of Cook Co.

The grove at 10 Hickory Lane represents an opportunity to expand the rare mesic savanna ecosystem, making the Hickory Lane oaks uniquely significant.

Because this grove is part of the historic Wolf Road Prairie Eco-Region, it represents a noted and outstanding example of Chicago Wilderness biodiversity. In addition, experts have realized that the edge between prairie and savanna at Wolf Road Prairie is an exceptionally rich ecotone.

The majestic Hickory Lane oaks provide an opportunity to enhance this partnership between prairie and savanna.
